Chrysoprase has been mined here by various individuals and companies since 1967.

Deep weathering of folded interbanded mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Giles Complex has produced a nickeliferous ochre in the Wingellina area. Apart from chrysoprase, the deposit also contains chromite, moss agate and magnesite. Some of the chrysoprase is a dark apple green colour. The reference suggests some specimens have faded when exposed to light becoming milky and opaque. Specimens though are rarely seen.

A large nickel deposit is a few kilometres north-east to east of the community, so it is thought the prospect is close by but needs confirmation.
