A note in Australian Mineralogist, April-June 1988 stated "A recent letter from Sir Howard Smith of Coolangatta reports a new find of hyalite in the hills near Currumbin. The hyalite occurs mainly as gum-like floaters up to 25mm across, weathered out of basalt. Matrix specimens found in the past from other localities consist only of micro-botryoidal hyalite".
CO-ordinates shown are simply for Currumbin and not any specific locality for opal.
