The Umfuli Tin Field occurs in Zululand, 15km east of Melmoth. Tin mineralisation was present in pegmatites in schists. Cassiterite was associated with mica, garnet, tourmaline, quartz and feldspar. Although the cassiterite was most commonly present as small crystals, some specimens were found as well formed prismatic crystals up to 1,5cm in diameter (Cairncross and Dixon, 1995).
