A former W occurrence/mine located in secs. 14 & 23, T8N, R15E, SBM, 6.1 km (3.8 miles) N of Castle Dome (coordinates of record), S of Interstate highway 40, along the northern margin of the mountains (10 miles N of Danby). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in gneiss. Most of the mine area is underlain by Archean gneiss and biotite schist, cupped by Pleistocene tuff and basalt. Small, thin lenses of limestone occur in the schist. The Archean rocks contain irregular intrusive bodies of quartz diorite. Limestone near the quartz diorite contains small, discontinuous bodies of friable, garnet-rich tactite. The Precambrian gneiss and schist are in contact with limestone. Associated rocks include diorite. Local rocks include Precambrian rocks, undivided, unit 2 (Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges) and/or Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert).
Workings include surface and underground openings. A surface cut is 25 feet long and 6 to 8 feet wide. Driven SW into slope 20 feet higher and to the S, a 15 foot, nearly vertical shaft has been sunk (grammar used by MRDS). Another tactite body has been explored by a 60 foot trench and shallow, underhand stope, with a maximum depth of 15 feet. Other workings are small stripped areas and shallow cuts.
Production data are found in: Wright, L.A., et al (1953).
