The Jacobina gold district comprises the Canavieiras, Itapicuru and João Belo mines which are located south of Jacobina. The deposits are hosted in Paleoproterozoic metaconglomerates and quartzites. They were mined from 1983 to 1998 and produced about 20 tons of gold.

Sauer (1982, p. 86, about amethyst): "The Lavra do Coxo deposit, otherwise known as Jacobina, is perhaps the most beautiful and grandiose in Brazil. It is located west-northwest of Salvador in the centre of Bahia state. The landscape is formed by towering quartzite ranges, separated by deep valleys, part of the "Supergrupo Minas" geological complex. Discovered more than fifty years ago, the deposit coincides with a vertical sheared zone, parallel to the regional vector, where gigantic quartzite blocks tumbled over each other. The cavities of this mind-boggling chaos are lined with amethyst, in layers frequently covering more than several dozen square metres. Crystals of diametres often exceeding ten centimetres, display a deep violet colour, verging on black, in their upper extremity. The base ranges from hyaline to translucent, with hematite and pyrite rims. Most crystals are of superlative quality, and easy to separate from the gangue."

Sauer (1982, p. 96): "A few years ago, marvelous groups of hematoid quartz crystals were discovered in the Jacobina amethyst mine, state of Bahia." [possibly referring to the Coxo mine?]
