The Province extends for c. 120 km N-S and encompasses 3 distinct parts. In the south - Glasshouse Mountains, which consist of numerous dome-shaped, conical and spine-like hills and peaks. To the north of the mountains, around the town of Maleny, is an extensive plateau of mafic lava flows. Further to the north, west of the town Noosa are isolated hills that are similar in form, age and composition to those of the Glasshouse Mountains (Stevens 1989).
