A REE-Th occurrence/prospect located in the center NΒ½NΒ½ sec. 8, T2S, R10E, SBM, in the southern Music Valley area, on National Park Service land (Joshua Tree National Park). Discovered in 1959. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. This is a deposit or group of mineralized zones located in the Music Valley. This deposit description includes the Ajax prospect (https://www.mindat.org/loc-220482.html); Baby Blue prospect (https://www.mindat.org/loc-295689.html); Peerless Nuclear Minerals deposits (https://www.mindat.org/locedit.php?loc=87259); Uranus Nos. 2, 4, 6 claims (https://www.mindat.org/locedit.php?loc=220484; https://www.mindat.org/loc-220485.html); and the U-Thor claim (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/mrds/show-mrds.php?dep_id=10115562).
The ore bodies vary. Ore body No. 1 is lenticular, stratiform. Ore body No. 2 is tabular and disseminated. Ore body No. 3 is placer. The primary mode of origin was metamorphism. The secondary mode of origin was sedimentation. Primary ore control was lithology while the secondary control was bedding. There is no wallrock alteration. The principal ore mineral is xenotime, comprising as much as 35% of the rock at the U-thor pit. Local rocks include Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock complex.
Workings include unspecified surface and underground openings.
There was no production plans because of insufficient reserves and metallurgical problems.
Reserves and resources: Type: in-situ (estimate year - 1983); demonstrated reserves: 50,000 metric tons of ore. REE (Y group): 13 weight percent; (Ce group): 8.3 weight percent; Th - minor.
