A county covering 7,208 square miles (18,670 km²) in southern California, between San Bernardino County to the N, Imperial and San Diego Counties to the S and Orange County to the W, reaching from just W of the greater Los Angeles area to the Arizona border (Colorado River). The central and eastern areas are mostly desert. The western portion enjoys a Mediterranean climate.

Major tectonic features include the San Andreas Fault zone that traverses the county from S of Indio (NW shore of the Salton Sea) NW through Desert Hot Springs and further NW into San Bernardino County.
