Named by John S. White Jr., J.E. Arem, J.A. Nelen, P.B. Leavens, and R.W. Thomssen in 1973 in honor of Dr. Kent Combs Brannock (20 July 1923, Independence, Virginia, USA - 21 February 1973, Kingsport, Tennesse, USA), chemist and mineral collector. He did a lot of early collecting at the type locality (Foote Mine).
