The Geuldal is a valley in the Belgian German-speaking Community, the Belgian province of Liège and the Dutch province of Limburg. The valley forms the catchment area of the Geul and its tributaries. Large height differences characterize the area.
The valley has a length of about 40 kilometers and extends from the upstream Lichtenbusch in the east to the downstream village of Meerssen in the west. In the west, the valley flows into the Maas valley. In the north and northeast the valley is bordered by the Vijlen Plateau, the Bocholtz Plateau, the Ubachsberg Plateau and the Central Plateau. In the southwest, the Geuldal is bordered by the Herve Plateau, the Crapoel Plateau and the Margraten Plateau. In the Netherlands, the valley has several side valleys of side streams, the largest valleys around Gulpen ending in the Geuldal: Selzerbeekdal, Gulpdal and Eyserbeekdal. Further downstream, the Colmont Dry Valley and the Geren Valley join the valley.
The protected Natura 2000 area (area number 157, Heuvelland classification) in the Netherlands covers an area of 2,472 ha spread over the municipalities of Eijsden-Margraten, Gulpen-Wittem, Maastricht, Meerssen, Nuth, Vaals, Valkenburg aan de Geul and Voerendaal. The area includes the protected natural monument Meertensgroeve.
In the southern part of the valley (including Gulpdal) this concerns the following forests: Vijlenerbossen (including Vaalserberg forests), Bovenste Bosch, Onderste Bosch, Roebelsbos, De Molt, Groote Bosch, Kruisbos, Schweibergerbos, Wagelerbos, Dunnenbos and an area on the Kruisberg.
In the northern part of the valley this includes the Bergse Heide (with Ingendael), Curfsgroeve, Meerssenerbroek and De Dellen forests.
The area of the valley is crossed by several faults, including the Geulle Fault, the Schin op Geul Fracture and the Klauw Pipe.
