Lanai is the subaerial part of a single shield volcano rising over 3000 m from the seafloor. The island is built of basaltic lavas with a few mixed cinder and spatter cones, which erupted from c. 375 feeder dikes concentrated in 2 intersecting rift zones, and a summit caldera (Stearns 1940; 1946).
