The Lorrain side is the left side of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines valley.
It was separated before the XVIth century and French annexation by King Louis XIVth.
Before this time, this side (north) was from the Lorraine Dukes.
Right side was under Austrian Habsburg empire authority and governed by the Rappolstein familly (Ribeauvillé lords XI to XVIIth century).

Perhaps the most important and richest mine of the district, Sanct Jacob of Lorraine is on the edge of town. Second important sector, the Musloch-Stimbach complex, was worked before XVIth century up to 1900.
Just on the edge of the town, is the 'valley of the apple drop' (Vallon de la goutte des pommes), another important XVIth mining area.

As this locality lies in the Sainte Marie-aux-Mines district, the place is protected by an archaeological mining district status and all collecting is prohibited.
