Fall, Oct 1977; 1200 g
A single crusted mass with a few regmaglypts on its surface fell near Iguaracu. Within the interior a variety of chondrules and chondrule fragments have been integrated into the matrix. Compositionally, bulk iron contents (26.7 wt%Fe) and olivine (Fa18.7) and low Ca-pyroxene (Fs16.7) are characteristic of the H-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically the meteorite is dominated by olivine and pyroxene (both orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene). Fe-Ni metal grains (kamacite and taenite) are common. A few grains of plagioclase and maskelynite are also present. Fractured chondrules, maskelynite, and the presence of clinopyroxene indicate significant preterrestrial shock. Mild oxidation sometimes stains the otherwise nondescript grey matrix.
Iguaracu is one of the 172 witnessed meteorite falls (including 4 Brazilian falls) classified exactly as an H5 chondrite at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database [June 2016]. The main mass is at the Universitade de Maringá in Fundaçao.
