Locality type:
The City of Mandurah is 75 kilometres south of Perth, covering 174 square kilometres, as a thin band along the coastline, and incorporating the large Peel estuary inland, and lower reaches of the Serpentine, Murray and Harvey Rivers. The shire contains a population of 80 683 (2013).
Mandurah for a long time was a collection of holiday shacks at the Peel Estuary entrance into the ocean. From the 1970s, it underwent rapid urban development, including several canal projects. A large new man made channel was created between the ocean and estuary, to the south of Mandurah a few years ago. The main purpose was to flush out the estuary with water. Fertilizer from farmland east of the estuary was entering the waterways, promoting algal growth.
Main interests are the boardwalk, sailing museum, and boat cruises at Mandurah. Fishing and crabbing in the estuary. Yalgorup National Park south of Mandurah with its tuart forest, lakes, and thrombolites.
