The Grand Sable Dunes are located west of Grand Marais in Alger County, Michigan. Towering over 300 feet above the Lake Superior shoreline, the dunes cover a 5-mile stretch along the southern shore of Lake Superior in the eastern portion of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The dunes are an example of what is known as a perched dune system, which are dunes formed atop an existing bluff (the Grand Sable Banks). The dunes were created during the last major ice advance/retreat event called the Marquette readvance. Major water level fluctuations in Lake Superior during this event resulted in significant erosion of glacial deposits, creating vast amounts of sand. It is thought that predominantly northwesterly winds picked up this sand and deposited it high on the Grand Sable Banks, thus creating the perched dunes we see today.
