The Marlborough Company was registered in 1876, to mine a portion of the Tipperary line of lode. A shaft was sunk, and in 1878 a five stamp battery erected at Sawyers Gully, about 5 kilometres upstream from the end of the Macetown Road. Large floods September 1878, delayed the battery opening until late 1879. By 1882, the mine was producing an average of 4 ounces per tonne from 300 tonnes of ore. In 1886 the company was liquidated. The now ten stamp battery was purchased by the Premier Company. The battery site is now called the Premier battery, located near the confluence of the Sawyer Gully and Rich Burn. Co-ordinates show the battery site.
