Fourteen actively mined (as of 2006) iron ore deposits with up to 65 % iron located in the Bailadila Hills which form two parallel ranges in a north -south direction. The range is approximately 40km in length and 4 km in width.
A railway line was built to carry ore to the coast.
The Bailadila range of hills range comprises fourteen deposits:
(i) Deposits No.1 to 5 in the Western ridge;
(ii) Deposits No. 6 to 12 in the Eastern ridge; and
(iii) Deposits 13 & 14 in the southern section of the Bailadila Range.
Hematite iron ore was first report in this area by P.N.Gose.
