A former limestone-magnesite (tufa) deposit/well located in the W½ sec. 24, T10N, R19E, MDM, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) W of Markleeville, at Grover Hot Springs, along Hot Springs Creek, on National Forest land (Gtrover Hot Springs State Park). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in Late Cretaceous granitoid rock. This deposit is close to a N-striking fault that has been traced to Nevada. Two groups of springs have historical temperatures from 128 to 146 degrees Farenheit. There is active continuing accumulation of terrace calcareous tufa. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Related structures include the Sierra Nevada Batholith.
Analytical data of tufa: values expressed in grams/U.S. gallon (3.8 liters): NaCl: 19.91; Na2SO4: 12.02; Na2CO3: 34.10; CaCO3: 6.38; MgCO3: 1.16; silica: 0.82; Fe & Al: 0.32; organic matter: trace.
