A former Cr-Fe occurrence/mine located in sec. 21, T11N, R8E, MDM, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) NNW of Flagstaff Hill (coordinates of record), along Granite Ravine (near its mouth) (approximately 5.5 air miles SW of Pilot Hill), on private land. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.

Mineralization is hosted in dunite. The ore body forms irregular lenses with a width of 27.43 meters and a length of 121.92 meters. There are 2 major ore bodies, called the Eastern and Western ore bodies, and several smaller ones are exposed. The West body is 400 feet longh, 90 feet wide and 140 feet deep. The East body is 210 feet long, 65 feet wide and 75 feet deep. Layering of the chromite in the major ore bodies is prominent. In the Western body, the layers strike N5-45E and dip 45-75NW. Those in the Eastern body strike N20E to N10W and dip from 55W to 80E. Local alteration includes serpentinization, silification and alteration to talc and magnesite. Associated rocks include diorite, peridotite and pyroxenite. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).

Workings include surface openings comprised of a large bulldozer scrape and several cuts.

Analytical data results: the ore bodies average 5% Cr2O3.

One sample of massive ore contained 44.1% Cr2O3. The ore is high in Fe.

Reserve-resource data are found in: Cater, F.W., Jr., G.A. Rynearson & D.H. Dow (1951).

Although low in grade, the disseminated ore bodies in Chrome Gulch appear to contain the largest reserves of any group in the Flagstaff Hill area or perhaps in California.
