A former Au mine located in the W½ sec. 13 & in the E½ sec. 14, T3S, R16E, MDM, 0.8 km (2,500 feet) NW of Virginia Point (coordinates of record). Discovered in 1850. Property consists of 72 patented acres comprised of at least 5 claims. Operated intermittently until 1936; some exploratory work being done during the period 1952-1953. Operated by Sam E. Wells. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. There are several unidentified prospects shown in the NW¼SW¼ sec. 13, as well as several near the common quarter corner of these secs. - possibly they are part of this group.
Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 1,300 foot inclined shaft with levels at 100 foot intervals, connecting the adit haulageway; more than 10,000 feet of drifts and additional shafts and adits.
Production information: Reported total production was $824,000 (period values) - approximately $100,000 before 1898; 1898-1931, more than $660,000 during the period 1898-1931; approximately $64,000 during the period 1931-1936. In addition to native gold, ore minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. Some bonanza gold was mined from the upper 80 feet of the vein - one pocket of specimen ore containing large flakes and stringers of Au yielded $10,000 (period values). Cu production was less than 100,000 pounds.
