Gebiet Hochstadel - Rosengarten, Hochstadel, Gailtaler Alpen & Karnische Alpen, KĂ€rnten, Ăsterreich
Quartz crystals with finely dispersed asphaltum inclusions (not smoky quartz with which it may be confused due to its colour) in vugs and fissures of upper Triassic limestones. Located east of Hochstadel mountain, close to the Tyrol border. Geologically, this area forms part of the eastern Lienzer Dolomiten. The major part of this mountain range, with a geology very similar to that of the Gailtaler Alpen, is situated further west, in East Tyrol.
