This is one of several very old iron (magnetite) mines in the Balls Hill group, or Hill group on Balls Hill, hosted in the Cork Hill Gneiss at the contact of the Precambrian Franklin marble. This mine operated during the economic "panic" of the 1870's and was operational, at least, during the period 1873-1875. Workings were 100' to 150' deep. See Dunn, P.J. (1995), Pt. 1: 115 for a map. Closed by 1882. This locality is within the Franklin Mining District. The complete list of mineral species occurring within this district, as well as the official boundaries of the district, can be found under the locality file for "Franklin Mining District."
