A Cu-Fe-Ag-Au-S-Zn occurrence/prospect/mine located in sec. 13, T33N, R6W, MDM, 3.6 km (2.2 miles) NE of Sugarloaf Mountain (coordinates of record), in the headwaters area of Cottonwood Creek, on private land, within a National Forest. Owner was U. V. Industries (formerly U.S. Smelting, Refining and Mining Co.) (100.00%), California (1978). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is a massive sulphide deposit hosted in rhyolite. The ore body is a massive replacement body The primary mode of origin was hydrothermal and the secondary mode was contact metasomatism. Primary ore control was folding and secondary was faulting. Wallrock alteration is moderate (intermediate argillic, sericitic and pyritization). Gossan contains appreciable amount of Au - from a trace to 0.575 oz/ton. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 1 (Eastern Klamath Mountains).
Local structures include steeply dipping shear zones.
This deposit occurs near gently dipping gradational contact between upper and middle units of the Balaklala Rhyolite. The upper-most middle unit is coarse volcanic breccia. The lower part is rhyolite alternating with pyroclastic rocks. The upper unit is poorly bedded tuff. Foliation in both units, most pronounced in the middle unit, where it strikes NE and dips steeply. Most rocks are heavily pyritized.
Workings include underground openings with a total length of 914.4 meters, and comprised of 10 adits. Some exploratory drilling was done along the ridge NW of the mine. No ore was found. The lack of stopes indicates that mineable ore was not found.
