A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 36, T20N, R10E, MDM, 2.0 km (1.3 miles) E of Downieville, along the S canyon wall of the North Yuba River (3 miles E of Alleghany), on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate. The ore body strikes NE and dips 55W at a thickness of 3.05 meters. There are 4 veins. The Gold King vein and Gold Queen vein vary in thickness to 10 feet with a dip of 40-70W, between black slate walls. The Vesuvius vein trends NW and dips 50 SW, and varies from a seam to 18 inches (45 cm) thick. The Victor vein is undeveloped. Mariposite was said to be an indicator of good ore. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a shaft with 3 levels, adits and drifts totaling about 1,000 feet.
Production data are found in: Crawford, James John (1896).
No other production record was found.
