Turquoise in weathered trachyte. Numerous mines in the area.

Arguably the world's finest specimens of turquoise have come from this deposit. The occurrences were already mined by the ancient Persians from at least 5,000 years BC.

The Ali-mersai Mountain deposit is located about 75 km NNW from Nishapur (in Nishapur County) and 125 km NW from Mashhad. It seems that all turquoises labeled as from Mashhad area are actually from Nishâpûr deposit.
