The province is centred on the middle reaches of Otago Harbour, around which are distributed the products of the deeply dissected Dunedin Volcano, East Otago Volcanic Province, Dunedin City, Otago Region, New Zealand, the present diameter of which is c. 30 km. Peripheral parts of the province extend to the SW and c. 90 km to the north and NW and include remnants of flows, tuffs, plugs and dikes referred to as the Waipiata Volcanic Formation (Coombs & Wilkinson 1969). In the NE there is an overlap with the volcanic rocks of NE Otago Volcanic Field, Waitaki District, Canterbury Region, New Zealand.
