Located 12 kilometres south of Ravensthorpe. The Elverdton Mine poppet head and creamy green mullock pile can be seen east of the Ravensthorpe-Hopetoun Road. The Elverdton Mine sits at the southern end of the deposit, with a series of shallow pits following the vein north-east for about 500 metres. A gravel road to a scenic lookout intersects the vein halfway, and the diggings north of the road are considered the Mt Desmond Mine, and south of the road Elverdton.
Surface mining started here around 1900. The Elverdton Mine was operating between 1956-1972. A small potash operation for farm fertilizer continues, but beyond this mining ceased in 1972. There is much rubbish around the mine, and the mullock heap is busily eroding into a nearby stream. Azurite and malachite is common in the Mt Desmond section, while malachite only is common in the Elverdton section.
The mine occupies a north to north north-west trending, east dipping shear zone. This contains biotite granodiorite, plagioclase-hornblende-chlorite-quartz, metadolerite, metabasalt, quartz-plagioclase-biotite-chlorite-hornblende schist. Primary ore pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, magnetite, rare ilmenite in quartz and trace galena. The oxidised zone is down to 26.5 metres contains malachite, azurite, covellite (and rare un-named silver-bismuth-tellurides (?) Marston 1979). This mineralised zone is 2-18 metres wide as irregular shoots in minor faults.
