Town and municipality.
Famous emerald mining district located 60 miles (ca. 97 km) north of Bogotá.
The emerald deposits occur in organic-rich black shales. Evidence from the Muzo mine shows that hydrothermal brines transported evaporitic sulphate to structurally favourable sites, where it was thermochemically reduced (Ottaway et al., 1994). The latter authors suggest that the sulphur generated by this process reacted with organic matter in the shales to release trapped chromium, vanadium and beryllium, which in turn enabled emerald formation.
