About Ixiolite-(Mn2+)Hide

The Ta analogue of nioboixiolite-(Mn2+).

Unique IdentifiersHide

Mindat ID:
56148
Long-form identifier:
mindat:1:1:56148:2
GUID
(UUID V4):
cf07c0a0-1883-4cec-adf8-6b735af2b7e9

IMA Classification of Ixiolite-(Mn2+)Hide

Approved
IMA status notes:
Redefined by the IMA
IMA Formula:
(Ta2/3Mn2+1/3)O2
Approval history:
The old “ixiolite” has been redefined and results now in two distinct mineral species: ixiolite-(Mn2+), with end-member formula (TaMn)O2, and ixiolite-(Fe2+), with end-member formula (TaFe)O2. The type locality for both is Skogsböle, Kimito Island, Finland.

Classification of Ixiolite-(Mn2+)Hide

4.DB.25

4 : OXIDES (Hydroxides, V[5,6] vanadates, arsenites, antimonites, bismuthites, sulfites, selenites, tellurites, iodates)
D : Metal: Oxygen = 1:2 and similar
B : With medium-sized cations; chains of edge-sharing octahedra

Mineral SymbolsHide

As of 2021 there are now IMA–CNMNC approved mineral symbols (abbreviations) for each mineral species, useful for tables and diagrams.

Chemistry of Ixiolite-(Mn2+)Hide

Mindat Formula:
(Ta0.67Mn2+0.33)O2

Crystallography of Ixiolite-(Mn2+)Hide

Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Cell Parameters:
a = 4.785 Å, b = 5.758 Å, c = 5.160 Å
Ratio:
a:b:c = 0.831 : 1 : 0.896
Unit Cell V:
142.17 ų (Calculated from Unit Cell)
Comment:
Nickel et al. (1963) give space group Pcan (non-standard setting) and unit-cell parameters a = 5.731, b = 4.742, c = 5.152 Å. Grice et al. (1976) give space group Pbcn (non-standard setting) and the unit-cell parameters a = 4.785, b = 5.758, c = 5.160 Å (used above). Heating usually produces an ordered wodginite-type structure.
