Chalk Mountain is a topaz rhyolite emplacement adjacent to the Climax Molybdenum mine on State Rt. 91 in Summit County Colorado. The site has been reported to contain topaz crystals in lithophyseal cavities in the rhyolite in addition to sanidine crystals 6 mm to 60 mm in length. The collector has not found any topaz at this site however, numerous prismatic sanidine crystals up to 60 mm in length have been collected at the north east corner of Chalk Mountain about one third of the way up the slope. The sanidine prisms are complete and are easily removed from the heavily weathered rhyolite. Also, small (2-4mm) doubly terminated smokey quartz crystals were also found weathering from the rhyolite.
Also extends into Lake and Eagle counties.
