Zeolites and calcite are found in spaces between pillow basalt along the road just east of Monkey Creek, along the North Fork of the John Day River, Grant County, Oregon. The basalt is part of the Picture Gorge member of the Columbia River Basalt Group and is of Miocene age (Radiometric date of 16.5 m.y.o. The presence of calcium-rich minerals indicates that the basalt flowed into a fresh water lake rather that a salt water which produces sodium-rich minerals. Small colorless rhombohedra of chabazite covered with scattered golden calcite crystals are common. Mesolite is very scarce. A scorpion occupies every pocket.
