A S-salt-limestone-gypsum/anhydrite deposit located 11.8 km (7.4 miles) SW of Benavides and 11 miles SW of San Diego. Discovered in 1917 (sulfur) by the Empire Gas and Fuel Company. Operated by Duval (sulfur) and by PPG Industries (salt). Year of first production was 1928, and the last year was 1935. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.

Mineralization is a salt dome deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 255; USGS model code: 35a.7 (35ag); Deposit model name: Salt-dome sulfur), hosted in Louann limestone and salt. The ore body is irregular with a depth-to-top of 137.16 meters. Local alteration includes biogenic alteration of anhydrock to limestone. The depth to caprock is 389 feet, to sulfur it is 450 feet and to salt it is 500 feet. The salt volume is 3.6 cubic miles to 10,000 feet of depth. Local rocks include rocks of the Goliad Formation.

Local geologic structures include a piercement salt dome.

Production data are found in: Halbouty, Michel T. (1979).

Produced to exhaustion (commodity not specified).

Workings included infrastructure for the Frasch production of sulfur and the solution mining of salt. Explored by Union Sulfur (1924 - 4 wells) and by Texas Gulf (1924 - 25 wells).
Structure: Piercement Salt Dome

Alteration: Biogenic Alteration Of Anhydrock To Limestone

Tectonics: Rio Grande Salt Basin

Deposit: Depth to caprock 389 ft, sulfur 450 ft, salt 500 ft. Salt volume 3.6 cu mi to 10,000 ft.

Deposit type: Salt-dome sulfur

Development: Dome discovered 1901, sulfur 1917 in oil test. Explored by union sulfur (1924, 4 wells) and texas gulf (1924, 25 wells)
