Salida is the county seat and most populous city of Chaffee County.

The Sedalia Mine, an abandoned copper-gold-silver-lead-zinc mine which exploited a metamorphosed sulfide deposit in Precambrian rocks, is located 4 miles north of Salida. It is well known among mineral collectors as a source for good specimens, particularly the large, euhedral almandine garnets weighing up to fifteen pounds and their pseudomorphs (Penfield & Sperry, 1886; Voynick, 1994; and other authors). In the old public and private collections the locality for these specimens is often indicated as Salida.

The Turret mining district, also known as the Turret Creek District, lies in southeastern Chaffee County, about ten miles north of Salida. The District is centered on Turret Gulch stretching from just west of Cameron Mountain near the Park County line, east down Railroad Gulch to the Arkansas River. The settlement of Turret sits in the middle of the district, founded in 1897 as Camp Austin.
