Locality type:

This brine-bearing formation is located in an anticline, in which high-K brines are found in the carbonate rocks of the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Group (mainly composed of carbonate rocks, gypsum, and salt-rock), western Sichuan Basin. It occurs at depth ranging from 4,465 to 4,565 m and the brines are enriched in a fault zone in the anticline.

The underlying salt basin developed in a sequence of limestone, dolomite, anhydrite, and halite; polyhalite is an ubiquitous insoluble potassium mineral. The salt basin was reached by the Pingluo 4 well, drilled in the central part of the salt basin, and the Fenglu 1 well, drilled at the salt basin edge. In the collected brine samples from the Pingluo 4 well a K+ concentration of 49.950 g/l was detected; from the Fenglu 1 well the K+ concentration reached 3.880 g/l only. Although both wells are located in the salt basin, the concentration of K+ is very different and indicates that the underlying salt basin is not a predominant factor in potassium enrichment of the brines.
