Shallow saline lake to the north of Basy (Astrakhan oblast), from which mirabilite and "astrakhanite" (blödite) were extracted.

Note: "ilmen" is a local geographical term (Russian ильмень, probably derived from Finnish "ilmajärvi", i.e. "small lake), used to describe a depression filled with water, which formed part of the early, very deep Volga Delta but gradually became separated from it. Because of their isolation from the fresh waters of the Volga, the "ilmens" are becoming increasingly saline. Together they form the vast (more than 300 sq. km) and extremely diverse area of western substeppe ilmens (WSI), located SW of the city of Astrakhan.
