A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the NWΒΌ (estimated) sec. 2, T18N, R10E, MDM, 0.7 km (0.4 mile) E of Chips Flat and 1.2 km (0.8 mile) NW of Plumbago, along the crest of Lafayette Ridge (ΒΎ mile SSE of Alleghany), on National Forest land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Adjoins the Colorado on the E.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in amphibolite and serpentinite. The ore body strikes N25W and dips 30NE. The deposit is comprised of quartz stringers within a few feet of, and parallel to, a serpentinite-amphibolite contact that dips 70NE. The stringers do not fault the contact, but rather, they die out in the serpentine. The amphibolite is much sheared and altered. The quartz is only in the amphibolite. At the contact the filling changes to a mixture of mariposite and carbonate. An example of quartz vein fading out in serpentine down dip (??). The outcrop of the contact is marked by gossan derived from Fe-bearing carbonate associated with the serpentine. May represent the S end of the N branch of the Osceola vein. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 65 foot adit.
