Name:
Named after Don Doell Sr. (b. 29 January 1948, Rochester, New York, USA) and Don Doell Jr. (b. 20 July 1982, Montreal, Quebec, Canada), Canadian mineral collectors who provided the first specimens for analysis.

"Topologically, the crystal structure of dondoellite can be considered a combination of the collinsite and messelite structures alternating along [001], thus representing a new structure type for minerals with kröhnkite-type chains." (Yang et al., 2022).

Type Occurrence of Dondoellite
General Appearance of Type Material:
Spherical aggregates (diameters up to 2 cm) of radiating bladed crystals. Individual crystals are up to 0.80 x 0.10 x 0.03 mm in size.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Mineralogical collections of (1) the University of Arizona Mineral Museum, 1040 E 4th Street, Tucson, AZ 85721-0077, USA, catalogue # 22710 (holotype), and (2) the RRUFF Project, deposition # R210003 (cotype).
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Found in fracture fillings in quartz-phosphate veins cutting a sedimentary iron formation with marine phosphorites and shales. Its formation temperature is estimated to range from 50 to 200 °C.
