In the Mount Hotham area, remnant basalt flows of the Tertiary Older Volcanics may overlie the sedimentary Ordovician slates and mudstones, forming cappings on some hills.

Note: "High Country" refers to a region north-east of Melbourne. The term generally should not be used, as the area is mostly contained in the Alpine Shire.
