A coal and gold mining town. In the late 1930's it was the largest gold producing area with 8 mines. By 1962 Springs produced 10% of the country's gold and 9% of its uranium.

It lies 50 km (31 mi) east of Johannesburg and 72 km (45 mi) southeast of Pretoria. The name of Springs derives from the large number of springs in the area.
