On June 16, 1893, Wallis Levison found a crystal of chrysoberyl in pegmatitic material excavated from cellars on the north side of 88th Street, near to and east of Amsterdam Avenue. The matrix pegmatite consisted of smoky quartz, oligoclase, and minor pyrite.
