An aboriginal man who was nicknamed Governor by the early white settlers in the area, showed Michael Fitzgerald a 10 oz nugget he picked up from Cuddingwarra. However, Fitzgerald was directed to another spot, and he discovered on New Years Day 1892 the Kintore Blow deposit in central Cue, which led to the first goldrush to the area.
Cuddingwarra is now a collection of abandoned open pits near the road 10 kilometres west of Cue along the Cue-Beringarra Road. For the purposes of this Mindat listing it includes significant mines found west of Cue to 15 kilometres from the town.
The town which developed at Cuddingwarra was initially called Dead Finish, but was gazetted as Cuddingwarra in 1895, named after a nearby hill to the west. It had a post office and three hotels. A 10 head battery was erected in 1898, later expanded to 15 heads. Nothing remains of the town today.
The area was historically active as underground mines largely from the mid 1890's to very early 1900's. During this period it is estimated 62 000 oz of gold was recovered, 30 000 oz of this from the Victory United/Fortune of War mine at 45 g/t Au.
Modern exploration began in 1982. Open pits began to be developed by Normandy Mining and Harmony Gold from 1999 to 2007 retrieving 780 000 oz of gold at 2.1 g.t Au.
