Historic gold mine.

The Northern Star Company was formed in 1886 to access auriferous quartz reefs north of the Band and Albion Mine and Star of the East Mine. Shaft sinking began in 1887. Despite an extended period of operation to at least 1902, little information was found.

William Glendinning was noted as mine manager in the 1890's. The manager notes in 1894 they are in black slate with flat quartz leaders containing sphalerite and galena, but no gold had been seen. Work at various times was suspended due to copious amounts of water.

In 1900 it is reported operations had been suspended for a lack of capital. In 1902, work resumes with a cross-cut put in, but that was the last information found. It is thought inconceivable some gold was not found considering the length of time of operations, however little information was found on gold production.

The shaft was located north-east of the intersection of Darling and Ascot streets, now inamongst housing.
