Saline playa-lake with an area of 17.81 km², situated in a closed basin. The lake is only fed by direct precipitation and local groundwater. Since the annual precipitation is ca 40-150 mm and the mean annual evaporation is ca 2800-4000 mm, the basin is generally dry. However, some highly saline water occurs in the central lowest part of the basin in years when precipitation is abundant. The basin, which is of tectonic origin, has an area of over 2000 km². The bedrock is predominantly Palaeozoic metamorphics, with some Tertiary sandstone and mudstone in the northwestern part of the basin, and Jurassic-Cretaceous and Tertiary sandstone and mudstone in the east.
