An important gold mining district in the province. Active from 1863-1893 and sporadically until 1939. In the 1920's, arsenopyrite was mined for the production of boll weevil pesticide.

Total gold production was 65000-69000 oz. It is reported that in the early days of mining, a one hundred pound boulder containing 77 oz of gold was found.

Mines / mining companies include th Skerry Mine, the Union Company, Montague Company, McQuarrie Mne, old Albion Mine, DeWolfe and Company, Rose Gold Mining Company, Bluenose Gold Mining Co., New Albion Mine, the Golden Group Mining Co., Loon Brook Gold Mining Co., Montague Gold Mining Co., Montague Goldfields Ltd., and the Clark Gold Mines Corp. Some workings extend to a depth of 152 m.

Several of the species (scorodite, yukonite, pharmacosiderite, goethite, lepidocrocite, tooeleite, akaganeite, realgar) were identified in tailings as post-mining phases and are very fine grained.
