Named fergusonite after Robert Ferguson (8 September 1769 – 3 December 1840, London, England), Scottish landowner, politician and mineral collector. The suffix was added in 1987 to conform to the Levinson rule for minerals with essential REE, in this case yttrium.
Compare also the chemically similar euxenite-(Y) and nioboaeschynite-(Y).
