Named by George Y. Chao, Judith Baker, Ann P. Sabina, and Andrew C. Roberts in 1985 in honor of Earl Joseph (Jess) Doyle (1905 - 1994) of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He was a mineral collector and discovered the species.
