Both Beryl-Columbite type and NYF granite pegmatites are found in this area. The size of the pegmatites varies, many of them can be up to 10 m thick to 100 m long. These has been worked for beryl (Santa Maria- coloured beryl is especially known from this area) but also beautiful quartz and amethysts. Some of the localities are situated inside the special reserves (national parks) of Marojejy and Anjanaharibe Sud. Illegal mining of Amethysts and Beryls from this area is a problem.
