β 'Natrolite Subgroup' Description: Gregg Little: ""On to the samples: The needle-like (radiating sprays) crystals are a zeolite and likely one of the three more common ones natrolite, mesolite and scolecite. Your crystals, these three minerals, plus two others (paranatrolite and gonnardite) are part of the Natrolite Subgroup which is part of the larger Zeolite Group of minerals. In the Zeolite Group for the natrolite-mesolite-scolecite series, it is basically a compositional variation of sodium and calcium with natrolite on the sodium end and scolecite on the calcium end and mesolite somewhere in the middle containing both elements. Since the crystal form, specific gravity, streak, etc. is the same, more sophisticated analysis is about the only way to differentiate the three minerals. To label this sample for your entry on Mindat, the best you can accurately do is call it a zeolite and part of the Natrolite Subgroup". Mindat photograph reference 1202859 Steve Ewens collection. |
