Zeolites were exposed in a Eocene basalt railway cut along the Southern Pacific Railroad at New Era, Clackamas County, Oregon, some of which was transported 60 miles by train and dumped along the railway bed. Most of the earily collecting was done by John Cowles (cowlesite) in the 1960's at the railway bed site. In 1996, Pacific Highway 99 East, above the railway cut, at New Era was widened and similar material was found by Bill Tompkins. Specimens from the railway cut consist of zoned needles some of which are scolecite at the base, becoming mesolite, with natrolite at the terminations. Other needles are only mesolite with a small natrolite termination. Nice specimens of calcite and other zeolites are also present. Rudy Tschernich
