6.5 kilometres west north-west of Northampton.
The main underground mining was at Kirtons North, where a stope was cut 70 metres long, on a lode 0.90-1.2 metres wide containing galena, cerussite and unspecified copper and zinc minerals. The Kirtons North mine is 400 metres south south-west of the Kirtons North Extended mine. It was mined over a length of 60 metres, and contains a shaft with poppet legs, 30 metres deep at the northern end of the workings.
The area contains several shafts, winder pad, ore bin foundations, treatment plant concrete foundations, tailings filling a creek bed, and a poppet head on the Kirtons North location. The line of lode extends 750 metres.
The Fremantle Smelting Company mined the central lease to 30 feet down from 1873-1884, accessing rich material in parts.
Between 1879-1887, 841 tonnes of ore was shipped from the mines. The Kirtons North extended mine also operated between 1915-1919, and 1953 with a total production of 409 tonnes of lead.
The Kirtons mine (Ml 128) is south of the Kirtons North mine, and was operated by Thring and Dwyer in the 1920's. They constructed a treatment plant, consisting of a 40hp Kynock producer, Gates cracker, bucket elevator, ore bin and rolls, fine ore bin, Richards pulsating gig and wilfley table. Further shallow workings are 150 metres south south-west of here on a branch lode, with a 90 metre deep shaft.
H.P. Woodward in 1901 states the Kirtons and West Wheal Virgin mines were abandoned. At South Kirtons there were shallow workings at the bottom of a depression, and to the north another shaft.
A 1971 inspections showed Kirtons North to be the largest of the group, with visible workings including shafts, open cuts, and surface stopes over a 120 metres length.
